Naomi Broady beaten by Vavara Lepchenko in three sets at Rogers Cup

Britain’s Naomi Broady bowed out of the Rogers Cup to lucky loser Varvara Lepchenko.

The 26-year-old from Stockport was expecting to face French Open winner Garbine Muguruza in the second round but saw her plans change when the Spaniard pulled out shortly before the contest with a reported stomach upset.

Qualifier Broady lost the first set to her 30-year-old American opponent 6-4 but won the second 6-3 to square the match in Montreal.

Broad had to win two qualifying matches to reach the main draw of the competition.

She saw off Lauren Albanese in straight sets and then defeated Nicole Gibbs 6-7, 6-3, 6-3 in final qualifying to land a first-round clash with Monica Puig.

After losing the first set 6-3 against the Puerto Rican, Broady recovered to reach the second round before slipping up to Lepchenko.
